Sony Ericsson is dead; Long live Sony Mobile Communications

Sony has announced that they have officially completed the acquisition of the "Ericsson" half of the conglomerate and have emerged with a new name.  No longer will we see Sony Ericsson branding on smartphones and tablets as they should all bear the SONY likeness we've become familiar with over the decades.  That's not to say, however, that some 2012 models won't have the logo or brand on them.  With Mobile World Congress coming in but a few days, it stands to reason that we'll still see a … [Read more...]

16e6a__Sony_Ericsson_Logo_HD-550x309

Sony Ericsson, citing  "intense competition, price erosion and restructuring charges", has posted some less than desirable figures from the final quarter of 2011.  Announcing a €247 million loss, the joint venture shipped 9 million handsets in the quarter, a 20% decrease year-on-year and a 5% decrease compared to last quarter.  Revenue was down to €1.29 billion whereas it was €1.53 billion in Q4 2010.  We don't have to tell you this but that's the wrong direction. It's not all … [Read more...]

Sony Ericsson has reported their earnings for Q4 2011, and anything but earnings they are. The company responsible for the Xperia line of Android phones took a loss of €247 million (~$ 317 million) for that period. The joint venture between Sony and Ericsson had its reasons for the poor showing, including everything from stiff competition to floods in Thailand. Ericsson, at least, has the solace of knowing Sony will soon put the company out of its misery when it takes complete … [Read more...]

16d9e__gsmarena_001_sony_roadmap

Sony Ericsson has some pretty big plans for 2012, including a dozen Android smartphones slated before October.  That is, of course, providing that the newly leaked roadmap proves to be correct.  GSMArena received a copy of what looks to be a list of codenames, prices, and respective launch dates for a number of Android products. The photos above (grouped into one … [Read more...]
